ABOUT YORK LIGHT
We are a York-based musical theatre company who produce and perform several productions each year. With both an Adult Company for 16+ and Youth Company (10-18yrs) we have members from all walks of life and ages but the one thing that brings us together is our love of musical theatre. We take great pride in producing our shows to a high standard, including working with creative professionals and performing at York Theatre Royal. Some of our members even continue to become professionals in the industry.
Passionate about theatre and musicals, we take great pride in bringing both new productions and old classics to York. We are a large family built up of performers, volunteers and backstage helpers who are dedicated to having fun and working hard. We have numerous social events throughout the year including theatre trips, film and karaoke nights, meals and of course our Christmas party!
We look forward to welcoming you to join our family or seeing you in the audience of one of our wonderful shows!
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Over 65 years of theatre
York Light Opera Society was founded in 1953 to perform exciting new musicals such as Oklahoma! (1958) and Carousel (1959), at the old Rialto Hall on Fishergate.
In 1960 we made our transition to York Theatre Royal’s stage with Brigadoon, and we have been performing there ever since.
We have produced over 100 productions including old favourites such as; South Pacific, My Fair Lady, Hello Dolly and more modern musicals The Witches of Eastwick, Disney's Beauty and the Beast and Avenue Q.
YORK LIGHT YOUTH
The company has continued to grow and in 2013 we launched York Light Youth, open to younger performers aged 10 - 18yrs. Our aim is to nurture and develop young performers who share our passion for musical theatre and pride ourselves on producing high quality productions.
With talented young people and strong leaders at the helm, this group has enjoyed great success over the years from its premiere production of Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat to their most recent productions of Barnum and Our House.
